Fan Railer Posted January 1, 2017 Share #3426 Posted January 1, 2017 The R42s are crap. They got exponentially worse over the last 18 months or so. I won't miss them lmao.
danielhg121 Posted January 1, 2017 Share #3427 Posted January 1, 2017 Its weird how they SMS'd one set of R42s when they are going to go so soon. Sent from my iPhone using NYC Transit Forums mobile app
Fan Railer Posted January 1, 2017 Share #3428 Posted January 1, 2017 (edited) That is literally how bad they are. Some of the cars won't make it for another few months unless they give them the SMS treatment Its weird how they SMS'd one set of R42s when they are going to go so soon. danielhg121 Posted January 1, 2017 Share #3429 Posted January 1, 2017 Yea they have so much rust on the sides of them. It's like they were made decades before the R32s. Sent from my iPhone using NYC Transit Forums mobile app

Around the Horn Posted January 1, 2017 Share #3432 Posted January 1, 2017 So now that SAS is open, should we expect R179 testing to ramp up or were the test crews on 2nd Avenue completely different from the ones testing R179's?
BayParkwayW Posted January 1, 2017 Share #3433 Posted January 1, 2017 Longer than the R42s, that's for sure lol. Lol if you look at the original retirement schedule from the 90s the r32s and r42s were due for retirement MANY years ago.
Fan Railer Posted January 1, 2017 Share #3434 Posted January 1, 2017 Lol if you look at the original retirement schedule from the 90s the r32s and r42s were due for retirement MANY years ago. That was based on a *normal* car life expectancy schedule. We're talking about absolute construction quality limits here.

cl94 Posted January 3, 2017 Share #3439 Posted January 3, 2017 While neither the R32s or R42s are in good shape, the R32s are in better shape. The 50 remaining R42s are almost certainly gone once they can get 12-14 4-car sets of R179s accepted. I think those will be the first cars to be reefed knowing how bad they look. Given the capabilities of maintenance facilities, I expect ENY to become 100% NTT before the gets a decent amount of R179s, but who knows with the MTA? Everything I have seen is that we'll still have some R32s kicking around until the R211s get in, if only as backup cars. SAS increased train requirements and they're certain to go up further once QBL gets CBTC (whenever that is).
danielhg121 Posted January 3, 2017 Share #3440 Posted January 3, 2017 I thought the reefing program ended. They're probably just going to scrap the cars. Sent from my iPhone using NYC Transit Forums mobile app

bobtehpanda Posted January 4, 2017 Share #3446 Posted January 4, 2017 (edited) Yeah, that's definitely QJtransitmaster or whatever it was... although it might not be, since that was a relatively tame comment. Back on topic; has there been any new news on the R179? Edited January 4, 2017 by bobtehpanda
