NY1635 Posted April 30, 2017 Share #1776 Posted April 30, 2017 The LIRR will lose a hefty chunk of money from those weekday Jones Beach tickets they sell. The weekday buses are usually about 2/3 full, which is a good amount of people. If the LIRR loses $19.50 roundtrip from Brooklyn/Manhattan/Queens people who say "screw it, I'll go to the Rockaways instead", that adds up to a lot for the LIRR. Perhaps the LIRR should just pay to run the lousy buses between Freeport and Jones Beach. Better than losing $19.50 from each customer who decides not to make the trip at all (rather than face severely overcrowded Jones Beach buses on weekends that pass up customers). The MTA has no interest in running a shuttle bus service outside of City Limits for non LIRR track maintenance reasons. Jones Beach is technically within Nassau's jurisdiction, which means that it's the county's responsibility to provide funding for bus service between Freeport and the Beach during summer. Ironically, the 1.5 million given to them by the State went towards saving the n57, n78/79, and n19, the 4 routes saved from being eliminated in April. Unfortunately for them, 3 or 4suburban bus riders commenting don't see the error of their short term thinking towards saving bus service on Nassau. It, the n25 and the n26 didn't receive any reductions in service. The MMC WAS on the low ridership list in proposed January Cuts. Never knew why that was saved, to improve the vans utilization rate? In the LIB days, it was mostly used by people waiting at Hempstead who didn't want to wait for the N15, as the N16 had short runs throughout the day. NICE is already considering using the new articulated buses to handle the large crowds traveling between Jones Beach and Freeport. I've heard that they didn't have the funding to run n88 weekday service this year due to the deep budget cuts. It's that and external factors forced them to spend the grant money they got in April on keeping the n19, n57, n78/79, and n1 weekend service from being eliminated. NICE didn't expect the Governor to provide them more funding for weekday service on the n88. The original plan was to just have it run during weekends. The complaints about the lack of bus to Jones Beach from beach goers and businesses must've been negative enough for Cuomo to step in. I hope they monitor the crowds returning from the beach weekdays between 4pm and 6pm, as the weekday crowd can be VERY heavy that time. With a non-articulated bus only once per hour, it's unlikely that everyone can fit. So ultimately they'd have so screw over one group of riders whether that be the beach riders or the commuters. Obviously the daily commuters are more important.
