NICE Planned Service/Schedule Changes

The LIRR will lose a hefty chunk of money from those weekday Jones Beach tickets they sell.  The weekday buses are usually about 2/3 full, which is a good amount of people.  If the LIRR loses $19.50 roundtrip from Brooklyn/Manhattan/Queens people who say "screw it, I'll go to the Rockaways instead", that adds up to a lot for the LIRR.  Perhaps the LIRR should just pay to run the lousy buses between Freeport and Jones Beach.  Better than losing $19.50 from each customer who decides not to make the trip at all (rather than face severely overcrowded Jones Beach buses on weekends that pass up customers).

The MTA has no interest in running a shuttle bus service outside of City Limits for non LIRR track maintenance reasons. Jones Beach is technically within Nassau's jurisdiction, which means that it's the county's responsibility to provide funding for bus service between Freeport and the Beach during summer. They have no reason to pay for services because Nassau has a repeated history of neglecting to fund their own transportation.

they should run artic's on the N88 considering the high amount of people who use the route. They

The most they could run is one bus most likely, but I would love to see them on the line.

According to NICE in their Facebook Page , the n88 will only run on weekends this summer due to a lack of funds. Ironically, the 1.5 million given to them by the State went towards saving the n57, n78/79, and n19, the 4 routes saved from being eliminated in April. Unfortunately for them, 3 or 4suburban bus riders commenting don't see the error of their short term thinking towards saving bus service on Nassau.

Mercy Medical Center Shuttle was saved too.

The Mercy Medical Shuttle was never on the list of low ridership routes eliminated in April. It, the n25 and the n26 didn't receive any reductions in service.

The MMC WAS on the low ridership list in proposed January Cuts. Never knew why that was saved, to improve the vans utilization rate? BTW does NICE bus shuttle van come out of Mitchel Field or Stewart Av where ADA Paratransit are stationed?

The MMC was saved for people to get to the Hospital, and folks south of HTC who don't want to wait for the n16 to show up.

I don't remember the n17 being well-used for getting to MMC.  In the LIB days, it was mostly used by people waiting at Hempstead who didn't want to wait for the N15, as the N16 had short runs throughout the day.  It was a victim of the demographic changes around RVC.

The N88 to Jones Beach returns 7 days a week starting tomorrow, thanks to Governor Cuomo and the NY Daily News.

NICE really needs to change the way they inform the public about the service changes. It wouldn't hurt to tell people a month before the changes take effect.

Well they probably only found out about this last night or this morning, as we all read it in the newspapers.

However, they deliberately cut a route that was very popular so the Governor would step in and give more funding.

Note the new weekday schedules though - they will only run once an hour so the buses will be standing room only & quite uncomfortable.  If they're going to cut service this much, they'll need to borrow an articulated bus from the N6 route.  When a weekday bus didn't show up once, the weekday crowds were so severe around 5:30pm/6pm that they needed about THREE buses to get everyone back to Freeport.  Once an hour on a tiny bus isn't going to service the demand, unless you use an articulated bus.

NICE is already considering using the new articulated buses to handle the large crowds traveling between Jones Beach and Freeport.

I've heard that they didn't have the funding to run n88 weekday service this year due to the deep budget cuts. It's that and external factors forced them to spend the grant money they got in April on keeping the n19, n57, n78/79, and n1 weekend service from being eliminated. NICE didn't expect the Governor to provide them more funding for weekday service on the n88. The original plan was to just have it run during weekends. The complaints about the lack of bus to  Jones Beach from beach goers and businesses must've been negative enough for Cuomo to step in.

According to their Facebook page, they only plan on using the articulated buses on weekends at this time, NOT on weekdays when buses are running once an hour.  I hope they monitor the crowds returning from the beach weekdays between 4pm and 6pm, as the weekday crowd can be VERY heavy that time.  With a non-articulated bus only once per hour, it's unlikely that everyone can fit.  I remember the severe overcrowding one weekday when a bus hadn't shown up (on a 30 minute headway) and the wait grew to an hour - we needed several buses to fit everyone back to Freeport.

The Problem with weekdays is that the N6 is using those buses and they are also getting full loads. So ultimately they'd have so screw over one group of riders whether that be the beach riders or the commuters. Obviously the daily commuters are more important. Especially since the bus will get a big load in both directions.

If the N6 commuters cannot fit on a bus, there are plenty of other N6 and N6x buses that will arrive within the hour.  If the Jones Beach riders cannot fit on the hourly bus (especially returning from Jones Beach at the super-busy 4pm to 6pm timeframe), they are totally screwed and stranded for at least another hour.

Some n27 runs will be extended to the Glen Cove Ferry starting June 10 to get riders to the ferry to Manhattan during Amtrak construction. Look at NICE doing something right for a change!

Except that the site got the PM ferry times completely wrong. There's only two trips, arriving at 5:50pm and 7:30pm.

It also comes up in transit apps because of GTFS data.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It doesn't tell where n27 bus will pickup at ferry.

I just compare the schedule. I uploaded all current schedule to internet archive.
