In an effort to steer things to some normalcy...

It is 1:00 AM on a Saturday.

Background:

  • The connection from the 8th Avenue Line to 53rd Street is unusable NB.
  • All of 53rd Street is unusable SB due to signal maintenance and signal repair.
  • (E) trains are running to/from 2nd Avenue
  • WTC is not accessible
  • All Broadway service is running on the local track.

Scenario:

The 6th Avenue line had to be taken out of service at midnight to fix signals which severely delayed service earlier on. No service is able to run on 6th Avenue in Manhattan. Broadway line remains in service, but there has been a person hit by a train on the SB local tracks at Prince Street.

Reroute away.

Note: You must first deal with the 6th Avenue situation, then deal with the Broadway Line situation to get a complete list of changes.

7:43 AM, Friday, November 15, 2019:

Three separate incidents happen:

1. There is an unauthorized person in the express tracks at 23 St/8 Av.

2. There is a door problem at a (B) train in the northbound express track at 34th St/Herald Square.

3. Similarly, there is a track fire at the northbound track in Grand St, and it has spread to the other track, forcing the station to close.

Reroute away!

Also, you can't fit (B)(D)(F)(M) and (A)(C)(E) into the local tracks. Similarly, (B)(D)(F) on Culver isn't going to work without having to reduce the headways or rerouting a line, and is also (A)(B)(C)(D)(E)(F)(M) on 6th Ave, this would cause considerable delays.

8:28 PM, Friday, November 30, 2019:

(MTA) decides to close the entire 53rd Street Line, from 7 Avenue to Lexington Avenue, inclusive. No train can enter or stop at any station.

It was a decision to prepare for weekend work from 9:00 PM Friday, November 30 to 5:00 AM Monday, December 2.

Reroute: (B)(D)(E)(M)

Also, don't put (E)(F)(M) into 63rd. It's not going to work too.

Actually, on weekends and overnight, you can have three lines running on 63rd since it doesn't come close to 30TPH.  That said, here goes:

(B) ends early on Friday.

Select (D) trains runs local on 6th Avenue

(E) runs via the (F) from Roosevelt Avenue-West 4th, then regular route.

Except overnights, select (F) trains run as follows:
Via the (G) from Roosevelt Avenue-Bergen Street
OR
Coney Island-West 4th Street, where such terminate.

Next:
Rail conditions aplenty all at once in the PM rush hour:

Northbound in the Rutgers St. Tunnel
On the express track southbound on CPW
On the middle track at Whitehall St.
On the northbound track of Montague tunnel after where trains going to Nassau turn off (trains from Montague can still use Nassau St. northbound)
On the (E) at the switches leading into Chambers-WTC

Big-time headaches!

(A)(D) runs local southbound from 125 to 59. Select (A)(D) trains may turn around at 125.

(W) is extended to 86 St (N) and (R)(W) goes via Manhattan Bridge northbound. Select (R)(W) may terminate at Court Street, or go via 6th Ave to reduce delays. However, you now have to deal with DeKalb Avenue...

Most (E) terminates at 2 Av, but some may turn around at Canal using the middle track btw Chambers and Canal.

TPHs:

Cranberry Tunnel northbound: (A) [10]/(C) [6]/(F) [12] = 28

More rail conditions in the PM Rush Hour hitting all at once!  They are:

On the 6th Avenue local northbound track.
On the bypass tracks at DeKalb in both directions.
On the Broadway northbound express track well north of the switch at Prince Street but south of 14th Street.
In the area of the switch at the Manhattan end of the 53rd Street Tunnel

Plus, there's a stuck switch at Broadway-Lafayette on the "local" track southbound that forces all trains to go to Essex Street and the Williamsburg Bridge

Reroute as needed!

Reroute as needed!

A perennial favourite.

The answer is always to first send only (M) trains through and to pull the plug on service in Manhattan ASAP so the major routes can pass through with minimal delays. (Chambers Street or Broad Street will be the western terminus.) Those in midroute will run via 63 Street. For alternatives, transfer to the (4)(5)(6)(A)(C)(F)(L)(N)(Q)(R) at Canal Street, Chambers Street, Fulton Street, or Myrtle–Wyckoff Streets.

Southbound (F) trains will be sent via 8 Avenue between West 4 Street–Washington Square and Jay Street–MetroTech. When traffic conditions are unfavorable, they will be rerouted via the Crosstown Line and northbound (F) trains may be truncated to Delancey Street–Essex Street. (N)(Q)(R) trains will make some nearby station stops in Manhattan; transfer at Queens Plaza ((R)), Lexington Avenue–63 Street ((N)(Q)(R)), 34 Street–Herald Square ((N)(Q)(R)), Jay Street–MetroTech ((N)(Q)(R)), or 4 Avenue–9 Street ((N)(R)). (B)(D) trains will continue serving express stations between 47–50 Streets–Rockefeller Center and Broadway–Lafayette Streets in both directions.

(E) trains from Queens will terminate at Lexington Avenue–53 Street or Queens Plaza (whatever @Wallyhorse means by “the switch at the Manhattan end of the 53rd Street Tunnel”). Use the (7)<7>(F) at Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Avenue or (R) at Queens Plaza to connect with alternatives and nearby stations in Manhattan.

(W) trains will be suspended ASAP to free up capacity on the local tracks. Use the (N)(Q)(R) trains instead.

Northbound (Q) trains will run local along Broadway. (N) trains will run local along Broadway in both directions to remove an additional merge in Manhattan. (N)(Q) trains will run via tunnel in both directions to keep DeKalb Avenue from becoming a logjam.

(D) trains will stop at DeKalb Avenue in both directions.

(A)(B)(C)(G)(J)(R)(Z) may be delayed as rerouted/truncated trains share tracks with them. Additional merging delays are expected at Queens Plaza ((E)(F)(R)), Court Square ((F)(G)), Prince Street ((N)(Q)(R)), West 4 Street–Washington Square ((C)(F)), Canal Street ((A)(C)(F)), Jay Street–MetroTech ((A)(C)(F)), DeKalb Avenue ((B)(D)(N)(Q)(R)), and Atlantic Avenue–Barclays Center ((D)(N)(R)).

(M) [8]

6th Av Express Northbound: (B) [6]/(D) [6]/(E) [5]/(F) [12] = 29

DeKalb Bridge tracks (B) [6]/(D) [6]/(N) [7] [2 diverted via Montague]/(Q) [7] [2 diverted via Montague] = 26

Broadway Local Northbound (N) [9]/(Q) [9]/(R) [10] = 28

Cranberry Southbound: (A) [10]/(C) [6]/(F) [12] = 28

63rd Street Tunnel: (E) [5]/(F) [12]/ = 17

And now you have to deal with DeKalb again, and the merging mess...

This is the best I could do without suspending any services. If you suspend (B) temporarily, you can get away with 30 TPH in 6th Ave Express by removing "(M) via Nassau" and 24 TPH on DeKalb Bridge tracks, without the need to divert (N)(Q) via Montague.

Next:

(MTA)'s executives did not like what the new person whatever that leads the (MTA), and it led into a fight that ended up shutting off power west of Broadway (exclusive) between Houston Street and 57th Street (inclusive).

For a weird reason, the switches south of 59 St and the tracks that (B)(D) use between 59 St and 7 Av has still has power. There's just enough power to allow up to 5 trains to stop on either level. More trains and the entire station loses power.
