Subway - What If?

Wrong rail past the fire (if it's possible.)

Power has been lost on the BMT Southern Division. Reroute/suspsend away.

For this purpose. I'll assume the IND Culver is not affected until the very end of its route and all problems are south of 45th Street or so in Brooklyn otherwise:

(B) and (Q) run to Prospect Park OR Church Avenue

(D) and (R) terminate at the 9th Avenue (D) station.

(N) terminates at 36th Street

If necessary, some trains terminate at 36th Street and use the lower level of 9th Avenue to turn.

(F) runs to Avenue X.  Some (F) trains terminate at 18th Avenue OR Kings Highway

Time for a simple and basic scenario that doesn't involve suspension system-wide.

Due to an supermarket fire at Simpson Street (plus debris from the fire ending up on the uptown station platform and tracks),  (2) and  (5) train are running with delays.

Reroute or suspension away (you get a vote up for adding the effect on bus service too as of extra credit just to make it a bit fun).

(2) and (5) trains run express between 3rd Av and E180 St.

Bx4/A turns onto 163rd, Whitlock, then normal route.

Other buses should be fine.

Trying to be reasonable:

The 53rd (E, M) , and Steinway ( 7) tubes are closed. Reroute accordingly.

EDIT: also the 8th Av line is closed from 14th to 50th St

Most (A) runs via the 6th Avenue Line between Columbus Circle and West 4th and then runs as follows:

Lefferts Boulevard trains run via Rutgers between West 4th and Jay Street

Far Rockaway (and if running, Rockaway Park) trains normal route after West 4th, stopping at Spring Street

LIMITED (A) service runs between Lefferts/Far Rockaway and the West 4th OR 14th Street station on the 8th Avenue Line.

(B) is suspended

(C) runs via the 6th Avenue Line between Columbus Circle and West 4th and then normal route.

(E) runs between Jamaica Center and 23rd Street-Ely (Court Square) ONLY!!

Single-track shuttle runs between the Chambers Street (E) platform and Canal Street uptown local platform.

(G) is extended to 71st-Continental and replaces the (M) on Queens Bouelvard

(M) runs between Metropolitan Avenue and Essex Street ONLY!!

Special Shuttle bus runs north between Metropolitan Avenue and the 71st-Continental station for those looking for Queens Boulevard stations.

(7) runs from Main Street to Hunterspoint Avenue ONLY!!  For Manhattan, transfer to the (N) and (Q) at Queensboro Plaza OR (F) or (R) at 74th-Roosevelt.

Since no one has posted a new scenario in a couple of days:

A water main break has knocked out the area around 74th-Roosevelt in Queens on the QBL, creating major havoc there as it will take at least a day to fix.

At the same time, a tractor-trailer crashed into the elevated structure at Queensboro Plaza, knocking out service to that station on all lines (the Queens Plaza station is unaffected by this).

On top of that, signal problems in the area of DeKalb Avenue in Brooklyn have knocked out service to that station (other nearby stations are not affected by this) and those will be out for at least a day while that is being fixed.

Reroute away!

NEXT:

A thunderstorm has knocked out power to the entire 7th Ave Line, except for the (9) in the bronx.

At the same time, there is junction malfunctions at Times Square 42 St forcing all of the trains to go on different routes causing chaos.

At the same time there are junction malfunctions at Grand Central, forcing the (4) and (5) to go local and the (4)(5)(6) to go onto the shuttle track.

Reroute, suspened.

BONUS:

There is a wide spread of junction malfunctions in the NYC Subway, causing chaos and panic to the most popular stations in the NYC subway. This affects all lines at the terminus, local/express tracks, yard tracks etc.

Rerooute/suspend.

Next: The City Hall loop has been deemed impassable due to a track fire. The loop is closed for repairs for a week. Reroute away.

(4)(5): Via Lexington Avenue Local south of 125th Street.

(6): Via Lexington Avenue Express - no service b/w Grand Central & Brooklyn Bridge.

or...

(4): Via Lexington Avenue Local south of 125th Street.

(5): No service b/w Grand Central & Flatbush Avenue.

(6): Extended to Flatbush Avenue via Eastern Parkway Express - Nostrand Avenue.

Just like the 9/11 changes to the (1)(2)(3) except on the Lexington Avenue Line.

I'm not really sure if this is really a good idea, because there wouldn't be any swapping at Flatbush since the (6) doesn't interconnect with the (2) elsewhere along its run. This can also create long gaps in service and delays whenever anything along the line goes wrong.

Rerooute/suspend.

Obviously, with power problems knocking out the 7th Avenue line mostly, we have this:

(1) is fully suspended.

Shuttle buses run between 242nd Street in the Bronx and 125th Street 8th Avenue Line station that include stops at (A) stations at Dyckman Street and 168th Street.

Additional shuttle buses run between 148th Street-Lenox Terminal and Columbus Circle in Manhattan (transfer between shuttle buses at 125th Street if necessary).

(2) runs via and replaces the (5) between East 180th Street and Nevins Street in Brooklyn (for this purpose, I'll say the White Plains Road branch is NOT affected).

(2) and (4) run local between Grand Central-42nd Street and Brooklyn Bridge going downtown and uptown between Brooklyn Bridge and 125th Street with a double switch of tracks between Grand Central and 51st Street (local-express-back to local).

51st Street is ONLY served by the uptown (2) and (4)!!

(3) runs New Lots Avenue-Wall Street station ONLY with LIMITED service to Fulton Street!! (the Wall and Fulton Street 7th Avenue express stations are actually on the east side)

(5) only runs between East 180th Street and Dyre Avenue!

(6) runs 59th Street (Downtown local platform)-Pelham Bay Park ONLY!!

As for the rest, it could cause a total suspension if that happened, so I'm only doing the IRT part.

The new 2050 capital plan came out! Lol, JK. :P But a new capital plan as come out, and it plans to have the following fixes:

Sea Beach shutdown.

West End shutdown.

7th Av-53rd St rebuild.

Lex Av-125th St rebuild.

Lenox Av-135th St and junction rebuild.

Nostrand junction rebuild.

E180 junction rebuild.

Myrtle Av junction rebuild.

Concourse shutdown.

Franklin rebuild.

Flushing rebuild.

Jay Street Metrotech, Bergen St, Hoyt- Schermerhorn Streets area rebuild.

Liberty Av shutdown.

Broadway north of 137 St shutdown.

Now you know the (MTA). The capital plan has been delayed for the first half of the year. In the middle of the year, they got a huge amount of funding, and there isn't much time! Everything is happening at once. Go help the (MTA)!

What if one of the lines would extend into Staten Island? I am actually very curious to know if the MTA would ever consider having some trains cross over to Staten Island. What does everyone think? Is it possible, or would it be as something you guess would consider a fantasy?

The line probably the best candidate to be extended to Staten Island (if directly) would be the (1) in my view, but that would require a LONG rail tunnel and if connected to SIRT would mean that line would need to be converted to IRT standards.

Getting this back on topic with something a little more realistic than what was posted before (and is unrealistic):

Switching issues make it so any train running on the southbound 6th Avenue local tracks from West 4th southward MUST go to Essex Street and the Broadway-Brooklyn/Nassau line.  This is stuck and will take at least a week to do a proper fix.

At the same time, a rail condition has hit the bypass tracks at DeKalb in the middle of PM rush hour, making those tracks unusable AND another switching problem going to Manhattan has forced all trains using Montague to the Nassau Street Line (from Manhattan is unaffected by this).

Reroute as needed.

(C) - some southbound trains terminate at WTC (some (A) trains run local in Brooklyn to compensate)

(D) - local in both directions in Brooklyn (incl. DeKalb Av), some northbound trains terminate at Pacific St as necessary

(F) - Brooklyn-bound trains via Cranberry

(N) - stops at DeKalb Av, some northbound trains terminate at Pacific St as necessary

(R) - northbound trains via Manhattan Bridge (use (4)(5) trains for alternate service)

Subway:

(2)(5): Manhattan-bound trains skipping Simpson St, then Bronx-bound trains running express from 3rd Av-149th St to East 180th St during this time.

Buses:

Bx4/4A: Additional bus service will operate.

Hub-bound: VIa Westcheter Av, right at Southern Blvd, left at East 167th St, turn left at Tiffany St, turn right at Westchester Av, regular route.

Westchester Sq-bound: Via Westchester Av, right at Tiffany St, left at East 163rd St, left at Southern Blvd, right at Westchester Av, regular route.
