Fresh Pond Posted December 11, 2014 Share #2551 Posted December 11, 2014 Tell me, why can't we add double letters to subway lines? Because it confused the shit out of people back then
MTA Dude Posted December 11, 2014 Share #2552 Posted December 11, 2014 (edited) The track maps show that between 135 Street and 145 Street, the has to share tracks with the for like a few inches then cross over to the middle track to terminate. Obviously whenever an uptown and arrive/leave at the same time at 125, one of them has to get held at 135 St to let the other proceed first, which in turn, delays the uptown and behind them. And a downtown can't enter 145 if a downtown is crossing ahead of it. Oh, got confusing on the wording. But then why can't a train enter 145th Street? MysteriousBtrain Posted December 11, 2014 Share #2553 Posted December 11, 2014 Oh, got confusing on the wording. But then why can't a train enter 145th Street? Rollover means there will be delays on both the and when they enter or leave 145 street at the same time.
CenSin Posted December 11, 2014 Share #2554 Posted December 11, 2014 Oh, got confusing on the wording. But then why can't a train enter 145th Street? The same reason your car can't reach the inner lane of a highway right after merging in from the access road. By design, the traffic already on the highway and the traffic coming has to cross paths.
RollOver Posted December 11, 2014 Share #2555 Posted December 11, 2014 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IND_Concourse_Line#History The Concourse Line was originally intended to be four tracks, but unfortunately, that plan dropped. If it were four tracks, there would be little to no delays at the 135/145 Streets area. Also, the would have been a weekday-only Concourse Express, while the weekday-only would have been extended to/from Bedford Park Blvd at all times except nights.

If the 4 express tracks were added on the Concourse, I would change the following: 161 Street would be converted into an express station. and would have to switch their northern terminals. runs local north of 145 Street weekends. runs express north of 145 Street at all times except nights. Also, local late night service is added on CPW to replace the .

BM5 via Woodhaven Posted December 19, 2014 Share #2559 Posted December 19, 2014 Why was rush hour service cut back from 241 St to Nereid Av? Easier layup to the yard.
RollOver Posted December 19, 2014 Share #2560 Posted December 19, 2014 Why was rush hour service cut back from 241 St to Nereid Av? What BM5 said. Plus, there's no need for train crews to bring the train into 241 St without contesting the terminal and reversing direction (then going to the yard or to Manhattan). The only runs on upper WPR in the reverse peak direction anyway. We don't want 241 St to become another Flatbush Av, do we? That's why.
Armandito Posted December 20, 2014 Share #2561 Posted December 20, 2014 Is it possible for the Sixth Avenue line to have a fifth service?

Armandito Posted December 20, 2014 Share #2564 Posted December 20, 2014 The 8 Av station could get more capacity for rush hour trains if its two tracks could be extended westward, at least to 9 Av. What do you think?
bobtehpanda Posted December 21, 2014 Share #2565 Posted December 21, 2014 It sounds like 4 services are enough for every line that has them... A pair of tracks can hold 30 TPH tops. If you have two services, you can split 15 TPH between them, but with three you can only get 10 TPH. Running a third service would mean cutting service on other lines by 33%. Also, for reliability purposes, two is easier to deal with than three on the same pair of tracks.
Armandito Posted December 21, 2014 Share #2566 Posted December 21, 2014 Would Fifth Avenue be fit for subway service? It could complement the Second Avenue Subway in curbing overcrowding on the Lexington Avenue line as well as the M15 bus.

It could complement the Second Avenue Subway in curbing overcrowding on the Lexington Avenue line as well as the M15 bus. The Upper West Side area has the Broadway-7th Avenue and Central Park West : that's two corridors. As for the Upper East Side area, the Lexington Avenue will soon be joined by the Second Avenue . Again, that's two corridors. That's enough as it is. What more subway corridors do you want? You also have the buses as well.

The Bx12 is the third busiest bus route in the entire city, and was one of the first SBS routes for this reason... I just got an idea! Maybe not (X). That sounds like a fairly roundabout route, but a subway route running across Fordham Rd and Pelham Pkwy is not out of the question since there already is a turnout to access the 207 St Yard in that location.
TrainFanInfinity Posted December 23, 2014 Share #2575 Posted December 23, 2014 (edited) Maybe an extension of the ? Then again, the is already long enough... That line would definitely be used, if it runs on Fordham Road & Pelham Parkway. The stations you planned wouldn't necessarily be used as a subway line..not to mention how zig-zagged it is.
