What a wasted resource to have these school trippers. Last I checked (MTA) is not the Board of Education providing pupil bus services..

I believe they still pay them a lump sum for all the Student MetroCards (not anywhere near $2.75 per student). I think the bigger issue is that they're not being compensated fairly, not that they're running the school trippers.

...at least as many of them anyway.

But yeah, to the general point, I've gradually adopted this train of thought... Especially when I would see more children boarding cheese buses at schools where the MTA has trippers serving....

FWIW, I remember when Grady had those B68 trippers (that used to line up over there at pigeon island... lol) over there where Banner meets Guider, back when I was in HS... I'm pretty sure this is still the case today, but back in the late 90's, the vast majority of kids that took public transportation to get to/from Grady took the brighton line; I'd say at least at a 95% clip.... The remaining percentage of kids that took public transportation did take the B68 (over the B1 & the B4 in the general area), but still not in a capacity worth bothering running a tripper for...

In theory, the City, State, and MTA each covers 1/3 of the cost of the student fares (beyond what students pay on half-fare passes).

In practice, MTA covers the whole thing.

They aren't a wasted resource. The high school I went to, those buses were packed. Without them, the B44 and B36 would be slammed. I had a half-fare pass, so I either walked home or took the regular bus, since the school trippers went in the opposite direction.

The only reason why I'm saying that it is a wasted resource NOW is that most kids that live in Sheepshead Bay have parents who drive them to school in the AM, and get picked up in the PM.  I get the drift that Nostrand Avenue service would get slammed if the school supplements aren't offered. But, by looking at this current spring pick schedule the school supplements are not really a concern with the (MTA) at this point if they are cutting a decent chunk especially the B49 supplement in front of Cunningham.

That's not just now though. It's ALWAYS been that way. The kids that lived in Sheepshead Bay, we were either picked up or walked. There were days when myself and other kids were driven. Other days we walked. There are a lot of kids that don't live in the area but go to school there that take the bus to Sheepshead Bay. That's why I said in the previous post that the buses were packed going in the opposite direction, and that's still the case. Opposite direction meaning Northbound in the afternoon.

I can personally attest to every single B16 trip being slammed up to the windows. I don't know how it is for other schools.

Any school that sees those school trips that the (MTA) provides, they are running them because they are needed because there are lots of kids around the City that travel substantial distances to go school. The DOE knows this and so does the (MTA). It's not even something that should be disputed, given how easy it is to verify (and I don't mean looking at how crowded the buses are either). The schools know how many kids from outside of the zoned areas attend. Regardless, if they don't provide school trippers, they would have to provide some sort of supplementary service either way.

The reasons why vary, from kids traveling to specialized schools, to overcrowding forcing kids to have to travel further to a school with availability and so on, and as I said, none of this is new.

I remember back when I was in HS the G train after school would be slammed enough so that you could probably fill up an entire train just with kids going to Court Sq. The amount of kids that would commute 90+ min just to get to school was insane, and iirc I remember some people that had 2 hour commutes. That's was and probably still is common for some kids in Brooklyn Tech, Bronx Sci, or Staten Island Tech.

Yeah, specialized schools/CUNY's are the king of long commutes, hands down. I know many people who commute far to get to these schools and it's a sacrifice they are willing to take. Reminds me of this story from my area.

Gonna be strange to watch Q22's go through Beach 22nd Street

This didn't happen, they terminated at Cornaga today (and turned back onto Beach 20th). Not entirely a surprise, since there's still plenty of construction going on near Beach 21st.

I used to work with lots of school kids privately for the last several years pre-COVID on my free time. While some of them walked to their local school, I would say the majority of them commuted by bus or subway, and it wasn't always because they were going to specialized schools per se.  Some went to charter schools. Others went to schools outside of their area because of overcrowding/lack of seats in the school closest to them, etc. Overall, there's a high percentage of such kids and it's been that way for many years, even when I was in school.  In junior high school, the school I went to in Sheepshead Bay/Manhattan Beach, we had local kids from Manhattan Beach, Sheepshead Bay and Brighton Beach, but also lots of kids from Coney Island and Sea Gate. The kids from Coney Island were substantial and they all took the B36 and packed on those afternoon school trips.  The kids from Sea Gate, the ones I knew were driven.

There's also the issue of schools simply not being in the neighborhood.  In our high school, we had "local kids" from Gerritsen Beach (Gerritsen Beach doesn't have a high school) and Sheepshead Bay, but we had a huge chunk that traveled from far away neighborhoods.  Those of us in Gerritsen and Sheepshead Bay, we didn't get full-fare passes, which is why we either walked or were driven. Walking I was a good 20-25 minutes away. I got a half-fare because I was right on the border of two high schools, neither of which was that close, so some days I was driven, some days I walked and others I paid whatever the fare was for the bus with my half-fare pass.

I wouldn’t say the school trippers are a waste. I remember when I went to Francis Lewis High in Queens the Q17/Q88 buses would always be packed. However in the latter years of me going to that school the trippers would arrive late and the kids would walk one block down to the Horace Harding and take the regular Q17/Q88 buses. As a result when the tripper buses would come they would run empty. However there are some trippers that were scrapped over the years. One that comes to mind that was eliminated was the Q58 from John Bowne High School to Junction Blvd. It used to be out of Casey Stengel. I know the Q64 had a tripper that was eliminated some years back as I never used to see anyone one it till it got onto its regular route at Jewel Ave/Kissena Blvd.

This was still the case when I attended Grady about an decade ago, most took the Brighton line. At one point I took B68 home regularly only because I got bored of taking the Brighton line after a while, got the same driver everyday lol. But it was an very small amount of students though. B68 didn't serve the neighborhoods most Grady kids came from plus it wasn't as quick as the train was so most didn't take it.

BTW they did away with those B68 trippers by the time I came there. I wonder what year Grady stopped receiving school trippers.

@BM5 via Woodhaven This is a scheduling change that I pushed for that will happen tomorrow, so you can add this to the list.

Starting tomorrow, an earlier BM2 will start at 5:20am from Canarsie to address overcrowding conditions. The next bus will then be at 5:50am, followed by another bus at 6:25am.

Yeah, I see it on bustime (they still don't have the schedules up). Has 28 riders onboard according to the counting device on the bus, passing Troy Ave on Avenue H.

Yeah, they have the alert on BusTime. I'll ask today to have the new schedule up. The guys on the graphic side can do that quickly if they expedite it.

The destination sign says JFK Airport for all three routes.

i thought i saw somewhere that the B15 has a AirTrain Station code. I'm assuming that the code hasn't been programed into other units. regardless, that's not a major issue/problem imo, as long as announcements are made

They do have the air train code on some buses but every bus I saw going into the airport only said JFK airport. It would help if it said lefferts blvd air train instead cause folks think the bus serves the entire airport.
