R179 8258 Posted October 27, 2016 Share #3154 Posted October 27, 2016 (edited) I've seen the video the propulsion sounds like nothing we have on our tracks but I do hear the airbags when it moves Edited October 27, 2016 by R179 8258
LTA1992 Posted October 27, 2016 Share #3155 Posted October 27, 2016 Sounds closer to the CTA 5000 series to my new s. But at a different pitch. Sent from my N9132 using Tapatalk
Fan Railer Posted October 28, 2016 Share #3156 Posted October 28, 2016 (edited) R179 testing in the Rockaways today. Set got the line up at liberty tower at 10:21a. Missed recording it departing Rock BLVD, but I'll see it at Broad Channel. Edited October 28, 2016 by Fan Railer

Far Rock Depot Posted October 28, 2016 Share #3158 Posted October 28, 2016 On the test track just north of broad channel. Going to work today I passed it just after 12 and it looked like they were setting it and the 46 set with it up to head back to Pitkin. Tried to take video but my phone decided at that moment to freeze on me. Guess I'm waiting till Monday earliest
Fan Railer Posted October 28, 2016 Share #3159 Posted October 28, 2016 (edited) The train finished testing around 12:15, and left Broad Channel at 12:40. Here is the train pulling out from F5 track into the station. It turned so quickly that I was not able to position myself well for a departure shot. I will try again next week. trainfan22 Posted October 28, 2016 Share #3163 Posted October 28, 2016 TBH that propulsion sounds annoying, then again I haven't heard it person. If its a loud as as I think it is then I kinda hope they went with Alstom Onix or the R143 propulsion.

If its a loud as as I think it is then I kinda hope they went with Alstom Onix or the R143 propulsion. It's MITRAC propulsion with new inverters. So far, what I gather from what I've heard today (but didn't manage to get on video), the pitch follows a similar profile to the R160B Siemens propulsion.
Around the Horn Posted October 29, 2016 Share #3165 Posted October 29, 2016 Now that I'm hearing the train at a regular speed, it sounds like the CTA 5000 series, which also use MITRAC (which one I don't know).

It really doesn't sound like the CTA 5ks. Those have a cleaner tone and sound like the WMATA 5ks, TTC rocket, and LUL 2009 stock. The 179's starting tone is more sheet-like, similar to the M8 or the WMATA 7ks.
jamesman8 Posted October 29, 2016 Share #3167 Posted October 29, 2016 The inverter model number I have fan Railer is exactly the same as the CTA 5000 inverter. It sounds different due to the weight of the train cars being significantly heavier then then CTA 5000 series.

Tonyboy515 Posted October 30, 2016 Share #3172 Posted October 30, 2016 (edited) The interior display on the ceiling looks longer and sharper-edged than the R160's. That really stands out for some reason. rbrome Posted October 31, 2016 Share #3173 Posted October 31, 2016 The HVAC air intake on the ceiling looks like cheap sheet metal... not very durable.
Javier Posted October 31, 2016 Share #3174 Posted October 31, 2016 The interior sign's looks a lot similar to the ones on the R110A, with more space, but with the use of the R160 LED components. The exterior signs however look like the ones on the R143's.
Eric B Posted October 31, 2016 Share #3175 Posted October 31, 2016 The sides of the ceiling are smaller, like the 142, and the metal piece that guides the openable part of the window is also like the 142's.
