Expect further delays in resumption of N/R train service via the Montague tube. Portion of the tube collapsed onto track last night, confirmed with management.

Unsure of extent of damage, but Structure to perform another inspection of the tube and quite possibly other tubes that had been flooded previously.

No further details at this time, only occurred several hours ago.

You mean the wall collapsed right?

If anyone hasn't heard already, the (A) will return to serving Howard Beach/JFK Airport on Sunday. They will provide a shuttle bus service to Mott Avenue, where I assume the Rockaway Shuttle will also be running. Link

I hope they inspect all the tubes just in case theres more damage. In any event this is an unfortunate turn. Hopefully the damage wasn't too extensive/

It doesn't say they will though cause it seems there is still damage out there.

Rebuilding the Rockaways After Hurricane Sandy

The Devastating Impact of Sandy

The high winds and heavy tidal surge generated by Hurricane Sandy effectively destroyed hundreds of feet of the a.png line mainline connection to the Rockaway Peninsula, leaving 35,000-daily customers without a direct rail link to Howard Beach.

The scope of the destruction was stunning. The North Channel Bridge, which connects Howard Beach and Broad Channel over Jamaica Bay, as well as a section of Broad Channel known as "The Flats" sustained a tremendous amount of damage. Hundreds of feet of track were destroyed on the bridge and the line segment that runs through the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. There is no working signal system, the rails are twisted and in some areas, the supporting roadbed is completely washed away. The Broad Channel station is filled with debris, including a jet ski and a speedboat.

MTA NYC Transit is coordinating closely with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and the National Wildlife Refuge on how best to take remedial action to stabilize the structure and minimize further erosion and begin clean-up efforts. Both of these actions require significant work because the tidal surge not only undermined the track structure for long lengths, but also created totally new tidal estuaries between the two bays on either side of the structure.

Damage Assessment and Plans to Rebuild

While detailed assessment efforts continue, the segment of the Rockaway Line between Howard Beach and the Rockaway Peninsula will remain out of service for the next several months.

The reconstruction will be a tremendous undertaking, requiring months of planning and labor, but please know that we are committed to rebuilding and resuming service as it operated before Sandy hit our shores.

Work Underway to Restore Service

We have already begun repairing mainline track, signals and electrical components as well as every station along the Rockaway Peninsula from Far Rockaway to Rockaway Park.

Beginning Sunday, a.png trains will operate between 207th St and the Howard Beach/JFK AirTrain station. From there, customers can board a free Shuttle Bus to the Far Rockaway/Mott Ave station.

Our Pledge to You

Before Sandy's arrival, we safely evacuated customers, and secured equipment to weather the storm, and with the intention of bringing service back as soon as we were safely able to do so. Taking into account the breadth of our service area as a whole, we've been able to accomplish a lot. After Sandy, we worked to bring bus and subway service back as swiftly as possible. These efforts are continuing, and our subway customers are beginning to experience close to normal service.

You have our commitment—we will rebuild.

This seems quite reassuring. Hope all goes well!

Wait, I just thought of something...

They said they are going to run free shuttle buses from Howard Beach to Far Rockaway, so im assuming they take the way they normally take (Nassau Expwy, Rockaway Blvd & Rockaway Tpke through Five Towns).

And if the Rockaway Shuttle is going from either end of the Rockaways, what about Broad Channel?

I know of that damage, this is not in the station but in the TUBE. It just happened a little over several hours ago.

Wow. That sounds like it could potentially have serious long-term effects on not just the (R), but the (N) and (Q) lines as well. Especially when you combine it with the Sea Beach Line remaining out of service due to all the damage that line suffered.

Since they only stated shuttle buses will run to Mott and not Rock Pk then I'm assuming yes, it will be going thru 5 Towns.

As Far as Broad Channel, there's a possibility that since that station in reality sees very few passengers going thru the turnstiles, one would have to take the Q52/53 from Rockaway Blvd station. Now IF they do run a separate Rock Pk bus, that one would go down cross-bay Blvd and serve BC.

They should be running express bus service longer especially with the (A) being knocked out. In fact the representatives from those areas should be pushing for this. These residents already endure long commutes. I think that's the least the (MTA) could do and if the ridership is sustained, keep the service in place to provide those communities with better transportation options, especially in areas like Howard Beach, Broad Channel and so on.
