Calvin Posted June 4, 2020 Share #6578 Posted June 4, 2020 (edited) CBTC units 8369-8372 with 8357-8360 are on the but on the bypass option. And, from what I've heard, R32s aren't active at this time. Edited June 4, 2020 by Calvin

trainfan22 Posted June 4, 2020 Share #6581 Posted June 4, 2020 (edited) The R32s have sitting idle for nearly two months, I don't think they could just dump them back in service like they have been running every day. I would imagine they would need inspection, some mechanical work done, etc. The 32s still might eventually return.. The sets that are good for service are being prepped. In a few days time a few should pop up.
Lawrence St Posted June 4, 2020 Share #6583 Posted June 4, 2020 At this point the really needs to stop listening to Albany on retiring the R32's. The R179's have failed so many times to the point of TWO fleet-wide R179 out of service notices. These problems are especially serious from door problems to cars detaching from one another while in service. The R32's and R42's must remain in service until the R211's get here. When the subway returns to a somewhat normal level of ridership, we need to keep reliable cars on stand by until the R211's get here. Cuomo does not understand that the R179's are problematic, he is not a car inspector.

It's better than nothing, but they are highly problematic. Railfans who want them to stick around forever need to understand how old those cars are. Some of the oldest rapid transit rolling stock in the world, if not the oldest. They were supposed to be retired a decade ago.

This has nothing to do with railfans "wanting them to stick around forever" and more to do with R179 problems, and reduced spare factor. Nobody cares about the R32s and R42s personally so where did you come from with railfans 'wanting them to stick around forever" for anyway?

They have their issues, but they do not detach in the middle of a route while in service. Unfortunately if the R179's do not return for a service for a while, the R32's and R42's should go back to ENY in exchange for R160's.

In short, it's either reduced service or reduced spares. It's a lose-lose situation either way. With reduced service, there is a greater potential for crowded trains (violating the current social distancing rule). With reduced spares, there is little time for trains to get repaired at yards. The R46 is especially a prime example of this. Edited June 4, 2020 by Jemorie

Lawrence St Posted June 5, 2020 Share #6594 Posted June 5, 2020 So I was thinking about what's the best way to keep the R32's active until the R211's arrive and had an idea; 1. Send 6 10 car R32 sets to the Rockaway Park shuttle for beach service (since more service will mean more social distancing). The R46's from the Rockaway Park go to the increasing the spare factor by 1 full train and a half. 2. Send 4 8 car R32's to East New York for use on the .

The R42's return to service still remains to be determined.
