A Metro-North train car was seen going up in flames Tuesday evening, after the train struck two cars during the evening rush in Valhalla. The cars were crossing at Commerce Street in Valhalla when they were struck by Harlem Line train No. 659, Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokeswoman Marjorie Anders told WCBS 880. The train had left Grand Central Station at 5:45 p.m. A total of 800 to 850 people were on the train at the time, Anders told CBS2. There were injuries, but it was not immediately learned how many or to what extent.

Shocked to hear this was breaking news on the news channels, trains crash into road vehicles at RR crossings all the time, there's a bunch of videos on Youtube.

With that being said, RIP to the 4 people that died. Kind of scary seeing that M7 up in flames like that..

This was after sunset, given the time, and IIRC, track speed through there is 60 MPH; perhaps if there was still daylight, this wouldn't have been as bad as it is now. In the video is the crossing at Lakeview; Commerce is the next crossing after Lakeview, and you can hear the train blowing for the Commerce crossing

Hope the engineer isn't on the casualties list.

The plan tomorrow involves sending people over to the Hudson Line, among other things. The news conference Cuomo and Prendergast called fell right at the end of the 11pm news window and it got cut off the local channels right at 11:35 so of course all the channels cut away from the MNRR news conference.

And another thing: I keep hearing this was a 10-car train, I thought the MN M7A consists were supposed to be capped at 8 cars? When (if it did) was the change made?

It's awful and RIP to family on MNRR/Car. Maybe MTA should make another video working with Operation Lifesaver.

Not only motorists, pedestrians even ignores railroad crossing us well, especially on Metro-North, Long Island Railroad, and NJT Lightrail tracks.

If her car really broke down on train track, she was suppose to exit and run 100 ft away from train track.

There's very bad drivers everywhere near train/lightrail track.

This MNRR Danbury Branch of New Haven Line in front of Danbury Railroad Museum. These two drivers waiting for traffic light to change is on track and rear bumper is too close to train track.

Don't this reminds me of car driver try to beat train in Brentwood which caused same situation to LIRR riders?

Totally wild. This, ladies and gentlemen, is why we must advocate for Grade Separation on all commuter rail lines in this city. LIRR has done an admirable job at trying but they all need to do more.

Valhalla is not within city limits of NYC. Also, why blame the existence of the crossing? The lights go on way before the gate goes down, so the idiot at the wheel must have tried to beat the train and paid the price. What SHOULD be done is a safety campaign regarding what to and not to do at RR crossings. LACMTA does it with the MetroRail and they are fine. Sure they get the occasional accident, but people don't try to beat the train all too often.

Looks like Operation Lifesaver is going to be in full effect in New York. This is something you'd see down south, and out west (albeit against Amtrak and other freight trains). One thing that comes to mind about this was that it reminded me of that Metrolink train in Los Angeles that struck an abandoned SUV on the tracks (forgot how many were killed from it).

Ironically the Metrolink accident inspired a Law & Order episode of the same nature, even more ironically enough was that it used Metro North as the railroad that struck the abandoned car, killing most everyone on the train.

I'd be most interested to see what comes of this investigation. I'm leaning more towards this lady would likely face criminal prosecution had she lived.
