Lance Posted June 23, 2017 Share #3751 Posted June 23, 2017 It'd be really funny if these trains wound up on the line after all this time of believing they were destined for the . Not a serious post. Don't read too much into it.

Eric B Posted June 23, 2017 Share #3753 Posted June 23, 2017 They might as well, as being at Pitkin/207 they still can't be interchanged with the other 179's, because of the set lengths (unless they decide to do 9 car trains, but that's a whole lot of changes they don't seem to be considering). So wherever they go, they're going to be "oddballs" (which to me makes it still ridiculous to get so few; unless they decide to put most of them on the Rockaway Park shuttle or something).
XcelsiorBoii4888 Posted June 23, 2017 Share #3754 Posted June 23, 2017 (edited) I never discussed these trains and where they're going. Some say the A is final. Looking at how many they ordered, why won't they just go to the as 5 car sets? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk They still have to use a few R68 sets as those R179s wouldn't be able to fill in the entire Train.

The 5-car R179s would be much more out of place at Coney Island Yard, especially if they're the only R179s there.
Far Rock Depot Posted June 23, 2017 Share #3757 Posted June 23, 2017 I got a feeling those 4 ten car sets are to eliminate the need for the 32s and that one 68 they run on the A. A good assumption is that they are going to have them on the A for that reason and to keep them basically maintained by the same yards. I also assume that its only at CI since that is a major shop. Gotta have those guys go over the train and learn it. Sent from my LGLS755 using Tapatalk
LTA1992 Posted June 23, 2017 Share #3758 Posted June 23, 2017 IIRC, they were more for SAS Phase One expansion than anything else. 4 extra trains to cover the service. They don't necessarily have to go to the , but their purpose is basically the same.
Around the Horn Posted June 23, 2017 Share #3759 Posted June 23, 2017 There's a rumor going around that the set is there for EMI testing, so we'll see what happens. It was in the shop earlier in the afternoon.

Fan Railer Posted June 24, 2017 Share #3764 Posted June 24, 2017 What other testing does the R179s have to go through besides EMI testing? -Track testing (propulsion, power draw / regen brake, acceleration, braking, top speed, ride quality, etc) -EMI (testing for possible interference from the AC propulsion system on wayside electronics, etc) -Door testing -Suspension testing -AAS testing (I presume) -Simulated stop testing -30 day in-revenue testing

Tech And Transit Posted June 25, 2017 Share #3767 Posted June 25, 2017 Some of my shots, many shots are in DJ's video so most of it has probably already been seen, but if you want to see a race between a 160 and 179 it's at the end lol.
IAlam Posted June 25, 2017 Share #3768 Posted June 25, 2017 This photo is perfect for anyone trying to find the differences between a 160 and 179. Great photo
LTA1992 Posted June 25, 2017 Share #3769 Posted June 25, 2017 (edited) My editors eyes have identified a couple minute ones. The MTA logo is more centered (the flag is slightly lower as a result) and there are no grab bars on the outer right hand side. The silver lining between the doorway and the bonnet is much thinner. Actually there are grab bars on the right hand side, however they have been moved to the grey portion of the fiberglass, so in some photos they're hard to see.

MysteriousBtrain Posted June 26, 2017 Share #3772 Posted June 26, 2017 From the MTA page: The MTA is expediting the delivery of 300 new R179 subway cars with the first arriving this fall and all being delivered by September 2018. Additionally, New York City Transit will accelerate the delivery of 450 new R211 cars.

Grazie. At any rate, another minute difference. Truth be told, somehow, the bonnet looks cleaner with those bits of extra space on the black.
Fan Railer Posted June 30, 2017 Share #3774 Posted June 30, 2017 Took me long enough, but I was finally able to track down and see an 8-car test train running under its own power; here's the clip, mixed in with some more EMI test action with the set I've seen FAR too many times now lmao:
