OK, hold on a sec. There are relationships and there are relationships, and I would assume that someone as "learned" as you appear to be based on the finality of your opinions and the stridency with which you voice them would find that blindingly obvious. To the point at hand, by middle school most of us are aware where our preferences lie even if these preferences are not in any way sexual yet. There's a young man at my high school (one of the top few debaters in the country) who came into this school knowing he was gay and attempted to "do something about it," obviously to no avail. Another girl, a successful student and aspiring scientist, came out to her family at 13 and came out to herself even earlier.

 

As to the argument that homosexuality is a trauma-induced mental illness, explain this: the young man I referenced above spent two and a half years sincerely attempting to like girls, to the degree that he had a cadre of debate girls very close to him (jokingly referred to as his "wives") and worked incredibly hard to be a ladies' man. I never knew a more nerve-wracked, self-hating, twitchy, haunted kid than he was then. Fast forward to a slip among friends resulting in a kiss with another guy, and he's become incredibly self-confident, open, and comfortable with who he is to the point of getting himself a steady boyfriend. Ask yourself: which boy would you consider less mentally healthy were you to see him on the street? Which boy would you look at and think traumatized or abused? Which boy would you shy away from on pure instinct? If your answer is still the "after" picture, then there truly is no hope for you.

In a media-driven culture that glamorizes gays, influence is no longer just from the family like it was in the old days. I know for a fact that when I was in high school people who were straight chose to be gay because "rainbows were in." It was (interestingly) the "cool" thing to do, to have a boyfriend when you're a boy, or become a lesbian. What is more interesting is some of these kids ended up realizing the error of their ways and "turned" straight again. Others stayed gay permanently. Others flip-flopped between both week to week. The most interesting, I found, where the ones who "acted straight" during high school but them became gay after in college.

 

In short, its more complicated than saying "eww all gays are choice" and they should all convert. Now, there is absolutely choice involved with how one acts. If they're flaunting their "status" to everyone in the room then people have every right to be angry at them. They also have the choice to put their "plumbing" wherever they want. Just as every straight couple has the choice to copulate, every gay couple does. That's the issue when it comes to morality I think. Who gives a flying fart what you identify yourself as?

Hey, I don't find it that surprising. Like I said, I wasn't "exposed" to the lifestyle until I moved to Italy as a 23 college student. The U.S. in general is far more conservative when it comes to sex in general than say Europe. Hell in Europe I would see naked chicks on regular tv. That still doesn't happen here in the U.S.

Not all psychological disorders are hereditary or genetics. Psychological disorders have been around since the dawn of time. Some are envronmentally initiated, some are chemical imbalances etc.

 

It could be caused by hormones or something like that (though that imbalance could be caused by a genetic disorder, the way the tendancy for cancers are carried in the genes)
