There is no train service between Briarwood and Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer in both directions. I'll ask, when it is a GO do workers open knife switches or manual switchgear in a closet somewhere? But a 12-9 requires immediate REMOTE power shutoff that uses motorized switch gear controlled by "telephone lines" from RCC and there are far fewer of those, and they shut off the whole substation, not any particular track or 3rd rail "circuit"? No, power is controlled remotely from the Power Director's location. Emergency responders need more room to work. In the case of a 12-9 there's an investigation and lots of people milling around, many who only get Track Safety training once in a blue moon. Plus you need to look for the chunks so 12-9s cover a wider area for that reason. The other thing is they will express the outage area in relation to where trains can terminate (or where they want passengers to exit) so that the power may be on until 125th St, but since trains cant terminate there, they say the effect is until 86th St because its TMI. GOs don't have these issues since they're preplanned, so everyone involved is proficient in Track Safety and the locations of everyone are known and the routes around the affected area have been established, this is important in the B Division since there may be an unmanned Tower in the way so it may not be possible to use all the routes that are apparent on paper. 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

All those trains that were not coming caused some crazy crowding on the first that showed up at 5:27 PM. Looking back at the plots, I noticed that they are not very accurate. The was held at Spring Street for 8 minutes. It wasn’t in the tunnel between Canal Street and Spring Street for that long. There was no train in the station at Broadway–Lafayette Street despite the countdown clock reading “0 minutes.” The data here is also not accurate. Notice the number of Coney Island–Stillwell Avenue-bound trains that go express. That express track got a lot of exercise today. I was on the train that got to Coney Island–Stillwell Avenue at 6:16 PM since I missed the 5:13 PM at Broadway–Lafeyette Street. What’s interesting is that train supervision has made a habit of holding that particular train at Kings Highway right up to the scheduled departure time if the trains behind are delayed or bunched up. Manhattan-bound service has been leaving New Lots Av on longer than regular headways as I waited for one to come to Sutter-Rutland, and I got on a to New Lots just so I could get a seat straight to Manhattan. Unfortunately, it was taken out of service when it got to New Lots, but it did not go straight to the yard. It left the station northbound and possibly ran lite to Utica where I believe it was put back in service.
