Planned Subway Service Changes

Recommended Posts

Note that this weekend's service changes for the (2) and (3) Lines have been cancelled.

(2) Trains were set to run express downtown from East 180th St to 3rd Ave-149th St. Uptown trains were set to run express from East 180th St to Gun Hill Road.

(3) Trains were set to terminate at Utica Avenue, with shuttle buses running to New Lots Ave.

The last couple of weekends of October, they could technically just suspend the (Q) train and run the (N) from Stillwell Av to 57 St-7 Av (via Lower Manhattan) then via the (Q) to/from 96 St-2 Av and make the following changes:

- Extend the (Q) shuttle bus to/from Atlantic Av-Barclays Center

- **reroute the (R) back to Broadway for that weekend, unless the switch connecting the 63 St tunnel (F) line to Broadway is also out of service

*They have the (N) suspended already between Manhattan and Queens, and the (Q) is essentially out in Brooklyn. Might as well consolidate the two services into one route and the following benefits:

- No messy switching with the downtown (C), (D) , (F) and (R) all on 6 Av

- No short-turning at Prospect Park or at Times Sq-42 St

- Almost-normal (R) train service

*If the issue is route length for this 96 St-Coney Island (N) train route proposed during the service outage, technically the express tracks on 4 Av, Broadway, and. the Manhattan Bridge are open to Broadway trains, so those tracks could be used, and the (R) can just run via 63 St between 36 St Queens and 57 St-7 Av, still covering the local stops during daytime and evening hours. The (N) would then make the local stops via Lower Manhattan overnight. The only thing I see that would prevent this from happening are track closures along the proposed "open" corridors, but we know so far that 4 Av Express is open since the (N) is express in Brooklyn, and the Manhattan Bridge is open since the (Q) is running via the Bridge south side that weekend. This would also save on train crews needed in case there are worker shortages leading to "trains running as frequently as we can with the crews available"

  • 2 weeks later...

The (7) will be suspended in Manhattan on the weekend of Nov 12-14 but interestingly enough, the (MTA) won't be running special weekend (W) service this time (as they had done in the past) but rather a rerouted (Q) train to Astoria (replicating its 2010-16 route). There will be a (Q) shuttle operating between 96 St - 2 Av and Lexington Av - 63 St at the same time.

Planned - Part Suspended

No (7) between Queensboro Plaza and 34 St-Hudson Yards

Nov 12 - 14, Sat 12:15 AM to Mon 5:00 AM

(7) trains run in Queens between Flushing-Main St and Queensboro Plaza every 8 minutes days and evenings.

Shuttle Bus Free shuttle buses run in two sections:

1. In Queens between Queensboro Plaza and Vernon Blvd-Jackson Av.

2. In Manhattan between Times Sq-42 St and 34 St-Hudson Yards.

(Q) trains run via the (N) to/from Astoria-Ditmars Blvd, providing additional service between Queens and Manhattan.

(S) 42 Street Shuttle will run overnight.

Planned - Boarding Change

No (Q) between Lexington Av/63 St and 57 St-7 Av

Nov 11 - 14, Fri 9:45 PM to Mon 5:00 AM

(Q) trains run in two sections:

1. Between 96 St and Lexington Av/63 St every 12 minutes days and evenings

2. Between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and 57 St-7 Av and via the (N) to/from Astoria-Ditmars Blvd every 15 minutes days and evenings

To continue your trip, connect between (Q) trains using the (F) at 34 St-Herald Sq  and Lexington Av/63 St.

An out-of-station walking transfer is also available between the Lexington Av/63 St (F)(Q) and Lexington Av/59 St (N)(Q)(R) stations.

The "What's Happening" section for the (7) and the (Q)are listed differently so I assume there are track work between Lex 63 and 5 Av-57 thus there isn't a need for special (W) service but I could be wrong.

^^^Every 15 minutes along the entire (Q) between Astoria and Coney Island? SMH.

But somehow the 2nd Avenue shuttle is more frequent. 🤦

They could have just rerouted the (Q) to Astoria while extending the (M) to 96th, that's what they did earlier this year and for the longest of time too before the pandemic.

----------------------

Speaking of extending the (M) train, not as interesting, but overnight (M) service from November 5-6 only will operate to/from Essex Street.

That depends on staff levels. I get the impression that the subway is expected to be short on staff that weekend (compared to what we've often seen, anyway).

I know one of the weekends coming up is a promotional test and a lot of the TOs I was talking to a week ago were taking it or worried too many crews would be short handed. Last Saturday I was working the N shuttle in Queens, and many of the TOs hade their noses in study material when not out on a run down to QBP.

It’s probably a typo, and the (Q) to / from Astoria is every 12 minutes and the (Q) shuttle is every 15 minutes. For the Astoria ridership, it’s fine, but a 15-minute headway on the Brighton Line is a big no-no

I really hope it's either a case of mixing up the times or bungling an attempt to state that Astoria service will run every 15 minutes while the rest of the trains will short-turn in Manhattan, much like how weekday (Q) service ran while the (W) was sleeping. If it's neither, then this'll be a real shitshow.

Would not surprise me.  Friday 11/11 is Veterans Day (mainly a school holiday) and I'm sure some staff who have kids had already asked for that day and the weekend off to do mini-vacations to take advantage of that.

Turns out it was a typo as the 2nd Avenue shuttle is every 15 mins while the mainline (Q) is every 12 minutes.

no they have not because they can not.

No, seriously. You ask for your days off three weeks in advance, and for Veterans day, that's NEXT week.

Veterans day is the day before this GO (Nov. 12-14) takes place.

The (MTA) probably knows people already plan to take Veterans Day off because that is a school holiday and some are likely not to be available 11/11-13 because they plan to be on mini-vacations to take advantage of a rare Fri-Sun three-day weekend.

Once again you have developed a hyper fixation for an answer you came up with and won’t listen to us when we tell you that’s not how the world works…

Sure, the MTA is is expecting a lot of people to possibly ask for the day off… but here’s the thing… they are not guaranteed it.

At all.

Veterans Day is a normal schedule for us.

The one thing is that yes the subway trains will be carrying mostly air on that Friday.

This way it notes that the (R) covers the local stops at 14 St and 23 St

They really shouldn't be using the (M) for weekend service changes because that will just cause confusion.
