Coney Island-bound (Q)  trains run via the (N)express from Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr to Coney Island-Stillwell Av, stopping at 36 St and 59 St.

Gotta say this was one of the fastest trips from Bedford Avenue ((L)) to Coney Island: 45 minutes. That amount of time is less than what it usually takes to get from Canal Street to Coney Island even.

Given how the MTA usually handles things—either the bare minimum or more cut corners—the (Q) express via West End and Sea Beach was an unexpected improvement to weekend travel. Since the alternatives for the shut down section are the (2)(3)(4)(S)—which are drop-in replacements—the MTA could have simply run (Q) service from 96 Street to Herald Square as a shuttle and called it a wrap.

The irony is that this could have been made even less necessary if they had done the full-length platforms for the Franklin Avenue line rebuild. Since that two-track section of the line is shut down for work so often, sending the (Q) to Franklin Avenue would have provided a quicker one-transfer alternative to 7 Avenue, Atlantic Avenue, Union Square, and Times Square via the (2)(3)(4), and a one-transfer alternative to Canal Street and 57 Street via the (C) (with a one-avenue walk).

I wouldn’t ride the (Q) to Prospect Park myself, but hopefully, they are at least passing passengers between the (S) and (Q) like batons in a relay race and not running the two shuttles on misaligned schedules.

Agree.  They should seriously look at another rebuild of the Franklin Avenue (S), this time to a full two tracks and 600' platforms even if it means in some spots doing two levels of single-track to do it, even if for now it would be mainly to allow the (B) and (Q) to go to Franklin Avenue if necessary.    I would be looking to do that anyway as part of a longer-term plan to connect the Franklin and existing portions of the Myrtle EL (including rebuilding the upper level of Myrtle-Broadway) in a new Myrtle-Brighton line that would run from Metropolitan Avenue to Coney Island.  This would involve rebuilding a short stretch of the old Myrtle EL with a stop at Tompkins Avenue before heading south with a stop at most likely Bedford-Nostrand and a transfer to the (G),  This as I would do it would be a "Black (V)" train.

Interesting to note that apparently the past few nights this week the (E) has been cut off from the Archer Avenue Line, terminating at Jamaica Van-Wyck. With the 24/7 (J) suspension from Archer Avenue, this leaves essentially no subway service on the Archer Avenue line the past few nights, with shuttle buses making stops at 121 St, Jamaica Van-Wyck, Sutphin Blvd, and Jamaica Center.

They're doing Fastrack on 6th Avenue for the last two weeks of this month and the first week of October. Interesting twist though is that the (F) will be running local on Broadway via Montague Tube instead of Broadway Express via Manhattan Bridge like they did in the past.

Maybe to provide a transfer to the (D) at Jay St? Doesn't look like there's work being done on the Broadway side of the Manhattan Bridge

The most often provided transfer point seems to be 4 Avenue–9 Street though. That has been the case when they run the (N) local, but only between DeKalb Avenue and 59 Street. Using the tunnel covers no new ground since DeKalb Avenue’s catchment already overlaps with Jay Street–MetroTech’s. Running local on Broadway on the other hand actually provides alternatives to the 6 Avenue stations versus running express.

So the (5) is suppose to end at 149th St this weekend...but there's a slight problem, the middle track at 149th St is out of service...so how is that gonna work?

Relay north of 161st on the Jerome EL? (Like how the Low V Yankee special does?)

Get on (the conga) line!

Trains Rerouted

Southbound (B)(D) trains are rerouted:

via (F) from 34 St-Herald Sq to Coney Island

via (C) from 59 St-Columbus Circle to W 4 St, then via (F) to Jay St

We're investigating why a train's brakes activated at W 4 St-Wash Sq.

The last stop on some southbound B trains will be 2 Av on the (F) line.

You may wait longer for an (C)(F) train while they share the tracks with rerouted trains.

At that point just run them to Burnside…

Or not run them at all and just run extra (4) train service only between Woodlawn and Bowling Green. (Or not run them at all with no supplement). If the trains are sent to Woodlawn you wouldn’t need to pay an extra person to control towers at Burnside Av or 167 St to turn trains around.

The switches are controlled by Grand Concourse (167), Woodlawn ( Burnside) or RCC IIRC. I’ve made relays and work train/ transfer moves up there in the past. Carry on.

If you're going to relay them north of 161, just run the (5) there so you have extra service to 161 and the transfer to the (D) (Yanks are on the road this weekend).

That's basically what they are. They call them the (5) so someone doesn't get on thinking they can go to Brooklyn.

I find that reasoning to be shaky, at best.

Unfortunately as I'm reminded a lot, people don't pay attention.  If they simply ran extra (4) trains to BG, some would refuse to get off because they just assume the train is continuing to Brooklyn.  I would in this situation have any extra (4) trains if you did it that way go to Brooklyn Bridge and turn there with the (6).  It would go in there and anyone refusing to get off would simply ride through and wind up on the uptown (6) track.

Wouldn’t those Bowling Green (4) trains just loop around too and end up on the uptown track?

This past weekend as well as upcomings, there won't be (F) service south of Church Av to/from Coney Island. Alternatives are the B68 bus, (D) (N)(Q) service through the New Year. Weekend service for this change may not be in effect on Thanksgiving and Christmas weekend.
