Well, you aren't the only one who's asked this. I've already seen tons of people ask the same.

But below is a tweet from NYCTBus explaining what the protocol is.

Sweet! Thanks for sharing. I assumed a ancillary device would be used but it's good to know. Thanks for digging into the (recent) archives.

Forgot to add the photos from an operator:

also saw the screens on the B64 are now advertising OMNY being available on the bus even though they don't have readers yet.

I could see Ulmer Park to possibly get bases very soon. Only depots that have bases are Flatbush (transfers from MQ) & Grand (proterra bus 18)

Thats new, I haven't seen an OMNY reader saying "Front door only" before. Wasn't the whole point of OMNY to have all door boarding, or has that not been implemented yet?

They're probably are waiting for full-system implementation before announcing it.

Nope, never - bus or subway...

I have seen a couple people try to tap their metrocards on the omny readers though.

It's common if they are not from the U.S. because tap and go has been in place for so long in other places in Europe, etc. lol I have seen that also. It's funny because we're supposed to the biggest transit system, and we're a good 20 years behind many smaller systems. All door boarding has been a thing in Europe going back to the early 2000s. We still don't have it on every bus here.

Has anyone ever seen someone actually use OMNY on any bus?

I've been using it so far on the Bus and Subway. Much more quicker and convenient to use, haven't looked back since I began. For the record 6069 had a malfunctioning OMNY Reader, it was stuck on GO when I attempted to tap.
