R188 7857 Posted February 9, 2014 Share #3377 Posted February 9, 2014 7844-7854 debuted yesterday. Kinda figured it out, since the said that 1 train a week or two, so I assume 7857 will debut either next week or 2 weeks after. It's probably gonna test next week and go in service the week after.
Dj Hammers Posted February 9, 2014 Share #3378 Posted February 9, 2014 Just saw R188 7876 sitting outside at the Yonkers Kawasaki Plant. There's also a 72xx set there and a couple 79xx C cars.

LIRRHicksville Posted February 10, 2014 Share #3380 Posted February 10, 2014 Speaking of the R142A conversion set (7211-7220), that supposedly is out of service... according to NYCSubway.org, that was the first train on the to be tested in July 2000. No wonder the photos taken, show a dirty train as it is hard to believe it's 13 years old. The one "C" car makes the rest of the train an eyesore. Also, everyone speaks of the braking noise. Obviously, the yard (is that Parkchester?) doesn't treat it's equipment too kindly. Let's see how many of the circle/diamond roll sign lights still work on the R62A's, in a couple of years.

LIRRHicksville Posted February 10, 2014 Share #3382 Posted February 10, 2014 Just curious to why 7855-7859 had to be towed by locomotives? A 5-car set can't operate on it's own power or must it have the other 6 cars? Note the old "M Transit" emblem on the rear yellow locomotive.
cl94 Posted February 10, 2014 Share #3383 Posted February 10, 2014 Just curious to why 7855-7859 had to be towed by locomotives? A 5-car set can't operate on it's own power or must it have the other 6 cars? Note the old "M Transit" emblem on the rear yellow locomotive. They don't like taking A division cars through the B division without a leading locomotive or work service car because the trip stops are on the opposite side. One can only get to the Flushing Line by going through the B division by entering through Concourse or 207th Street yards. The trains then have to go down into Brooklyn or make some odd relay moves in Queens to get onto the Astoria Line, which has the only connection to the , a single double crossover to the east of QBP.

A 5-car set can't operate on it's own power or must it have the other 6 cars? Note the old "M Transit" emblem on the rear yellow locomotive. IIRC when the trains first arrive, they don't have the shoes that will give them power thru third rail. They have to head to Pitkin (supposedly where 7855-7859 were heading) to get those shoes. That's why the car was pitch black on the inside.

I recall reading earlier posts here that additional parts are added in Brooklyn. From Pitkin, the cars are then tested in the Rockaways?? then to the for burn testing, before being put into service.
ScreechyFlange Posted February 11, 2014 Share #3386 Posted February 11, 2014 I wonder if they're gonna spruce up the interiors on the converted sets.
NewFlyer 230 Posted February 11, 2014 Share #3387 Posted February 11, 2014 (edited) I wonder if they're gonna spruce up the interiors on the converted sets.Well I hope so. Its going to suck if you have to ride in a train with a use interior. When the R142A get converted do they basically rebuilt it as an R188 or do they change what is under the train? Fresh Pond Posted February 11, 2014 Share #3389 Posted February 11, 2014 I wonder if they're gonna spruce up the interiors on the converted sets. Nope, it looks like they just pulled it off the , slapped the C car in the middle of it, then threw it back in service in one day...

Lance Posted February 11, 2014 Share #3391 Posted February 11, 2014 I've said this before on one of MattTrain's photo threads, but it bears repeating. It will not be difficult to tell which trains are the converted sets and which are brand new. The MTA couldn't even be bothered to spring for a couple of mops, some sponges and some Orange Glo to clean the floors and other surfaces. It's quite sad if you ask me.

Everything is filthy around this time of the year... The trains are indeed filthy, but it's been so cold that I can't see how the cleaning folks could withstand the conditions outside for long periods of time anyway. I was chuckling this morning because I realized that I had the same express bus going to work that I did coming home based on a large stain that was on one of the side walls of the bus.
